For starting out I would work on your wifi network. Start by putting lite to no security and see how far you get. Scan the network and see if you can map the computers. From there add WEP, then WPA, then filter via mac and all the other fun things. Learn by doing and get Backtrack 2 or 3(I think 3 is beta). Good luck!
