Hack to learn NOT learn to hack

Profile Information

Real Name:
Codejunky
Occupation:
Software/Website developer

Just another curious being

Computer security is no better than securing your house-
You have a large gate, they jump the wall
You add stronger doors, they use the window
You make the house bulletproof, they talk their way in.

Security is about learning. The right answer is to try, the wrong answer is to give in, but there will always be someone who has learned to bypass whatever security you put in place.

Strongly believing in the above I strive to learn all I can on the technical and social side while specialising in neither. My proffession is as a software developer but my interests are in security. Particularly the security presented by the human element.

I also tend to code for speed and flexability above ease of development as I have seen many projects developed using standards and fancy tools (such as template engines) which exist to complicate my working environment.

My current employment suits my attitude as I am the only developer and most competent techie in the building.

I am looking to learn more about technical exploits and to understand more about the social engineering techniques.

Thanks for your lovely comment! :D I luckily had the opportunity to decide wether to be among techies or not. In the end I also had to withstand people telling me it's inapropriate for me to be so much into tech (my mother as well) but I never listened to those. Right now they're happy havin' me. ;-)

Hi,

I'm now translating some on my text in english. Got the project to translate our book in english too. But I encourage you to read Ilia and Chris books about PHP security.

:-) I'm 24 yrs old and doing this for about 15 yrs now. Hy parents were also both involved in techy stuff. That's probably the reason why I became quite eager in that field of science too. I wish I actually had more time to post stuff on my site.

Refering to your post on my wall about security I can say the following... LAMP is a smart, efficient and easy way to set up a webserver. That configuration has evolved over the last 20 years since it's secure as well. Oh of course Microsoft was sleeping a bit at that time and thus never gained greater market share in that field of IT. In my opinion L is graet but running a highly secure system requires OpenBSD or s.th. like that. A is a good webserver but you should also give lighty (lighthttpd) a try too. In case you're using apache right now check out your modules loaded, familarize yourself with 'em, learn as much as possible about (Open)SSL and mod_rewrite and mod_security as you can. I also recommend you to setup everything from scratch by hand. Do NOT use something like XAMMP except when you exactly know how it works. The M part refers to MySQL but the postgree one is better although not so wirdespread. Just compare 'em for yourself reading the respective website content and manuals. The last part is critical since it represents the actual implementation of your website. Avoid PHP! After years of coding and even writing my own Joomla SE (Security Enhanced) mod I came to that conclusion that PHP is taotally a mess which will not change until v10 I guess. ;-) Indeed I recommend you Perl or Python or something like that. Use a real language...

I read that some people on Remote Exploit (Backtrack) forums were trying to get something organized. Other than that I've been out of touch for a couple of months.

If you are looking to learn more about technical exploits and understanding more about the social engineering techniques (which demands to have "a special" personality I think ; for using this technique which consists in showing of persuasion and/or duplicity, manipulation and deceit to reach systems informations... It can be a great enjoyment when you do it for a worth cause but if it is just for fun or to bring trouble to a Cie or a person that hasn't done "nothing wrong", I find it a shame)
There's the address of an Hack Ademy very cool and performent : http://fr.thehackademy.net/
and the references of an interesting book : Kevin Mitnick - "The Art of Deception"

What a load of rubbish

A topic which affects the UK but would also be interesting to hear from everyone else too- Bin Taxes.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7747853.stm

The point of the system is to get people to recycle more, to throw away less household waste and to save the earth from all these horrible people who throw anything away. So far I have seen and heard of plenty schemes which have both made me laugh and feel sorry for the victims.

Die for your technology

I have stumbled upon this article about a subject which occasionally crops up and is then swiftly dismissed but never goes away-

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/07/nutter_tech/

I cant help but think this article is taking the (fill this space) out of the guy and is attempting to be neutral while feeling anything but. The topic is the damage caused to us by our technology, or the electromagnetic radiation killing us off. I… Continue

Microsoft Help Malware

When you need help and support with your Microsoft Windows where do you turn? Personally I find the Help and Support Center a complete waste of time which has not resolved a single problem for me yet. Apparently the Help and Support Center is providing help to hackers requiring the execution of malware-

By using old techniques to download a malicious payload onto a target computer it is then possible… Continue

Cards swiped under your nose

What is the safest way to shop? Do you rely on the security of your 3D secured, bank tracked, cancel at a moments notice plastic? Do you avoid the ATM or check it over thoroughly before inserting your card? Is the only way to scam your card to use the faceless internet after stealing all of the numbers from your well protected plastic which is sat in your wallet in your back pocket and your watchful eye protecting it?

NO

Just remember that when your using a legitimate chip and pin syste… Continue
