House of Hackers

Of course the 'art' of social engineering is not confined to using other people to get into computers. I'd think the sector that gets the most out of SE would be the businessman. Many books have been written on how to steer someone by knowing how to interact with others. Psychologists have done studies and Pick up artists enjoy their successes.

Now .. is there any difference between how these people use their social skills? If there isn't, would that mean a successful businessmen could easily transform into a psych, a cracker or a pua?

This thread is not about technical skills at all. Well, perhaps you're confused on what I meant with social engineering. Let me rephrase: Social engineering is like purposefully acting to influence other people.
A 'cracker' who uses social engineering could make someone else feel secure enough to drop protection or give critical information about the system he wants to penetrate.
A businessman could get the best out of the deal.
A psychiatrist could study or rather change someone in such a way to help the person.
And a pickup-artist wants to break the barrier between him and females.

All of these people are influencing others. Do they use the same methods? If someone was good at one of these fields, would that mean they would be good at one of the others? Or at least would they be able to master it easily. (Example: could a pickup-artist strike a good business deal using his methods?)

There might be differences in their usage and aproach, but the base has to be more or less the same. It is always about people and how they interact, you could never be a good psichologist neither a good SE if you are not able to gain trust.
But i don't think a buisnessman could switch that easily, because the different people do not only have skill but they have as well an ideology about who they represent or what they do, you cannot switch thah...
