ubuntu is slowly shaping up into something quite solid (not that stabilty has been much of an issue in linux). I like it though havn't yet played with 8.10, still running 8.04 boxes mainly but liking what i see.
Yeh, Ubuntu is pretty interesting. I'm not very happy with the fact that it dumps you into Gnome without letting you choose something else, but it was easy to get WindowMaker up and running. This is the first *nix OS I've installed that didn't require any hacking to get the wifi NIC running. So I'm real pleased about that......... But honestly, I miss the days of hacking the crap out of my /etc .rc files to get the box running the way I wanted. It kinda makes me feel a little less leet. :)

So don't use ubuntu ;-).
You can choose an alternate desktop (not windowmaker) on debian installs, or, as I do, make a basic netinst and then install the packages you want.
And yeah, there are lots of nice nmap frontends, but... wich one are you talking about?
Nicest I've seen is that one that started on a google summer of code.
