Opening this up for discussion, as it is a fresh topic (only a week old) and affects Australia as a whole. I for one am not hugely affected by the tax - I buy litre bottles of bourbon/rum regularly and mix them myself as required, as I prefer the taste compared to pre-mixed bourbon/rum equivalents. That is still no reason to let this just fly by - after all, on occasion I will buy a case of woodies, or if I'm entertaining, especially with young people, there are always pre-mixed drinks in play. I haven't yet seen the new prices in my area, however I'm led to believe that prices have raised a good 30% or so. Examples: Case of Woodstock - Was: $45.95, Now: $75+. Case of Double Blacks - Was: $78 or something, Now: $105+. This is apparently supposed to combat binge drinking in teenagers, as most female teens (and little queer fresh kids) drink "lolly" drinks.
To be honest, all I forsee from this change is that we're going to end up with a generation of goon drinkers, because quite frankly, people will just buy cheap shit if its that much of a problem. I strongly dislike Kevin Rudd as it is, and this just tops off his list of stupid moves moving into the prime job. But that's besides the point - what do you guys think of this new tax, its implications on binge drinking & prices of other alcoholic beverages, trends that may emerge, and the hugely increased profit that the government is now going to make from alcohol sales which it has nothing to do with (free money)?
