Hacker is really to broad of a term IMO; you could have one guy that is a pro at social engineering, and a guy who can code, but doesn't know shit outside of a standalone computer (AKA a network). That being said, what's your specialty? Personally, I think I'm good enough at social engineering, and "authentication" ;D
I'm writing software. I know (and have to know) enough about security so that I avoid the common and some not so common errors and I can do secure crypto as well. I'm not into black hat stuff, I'm not doing any exploits and I'm not trying to crack anything, although I might be 1337 enough to do that. The most black hat I ever did was to reverse engeneer the TaiPan B back then when it went around lol. I'm not a white hat either, since I don't do any security testing. So I'm a hacker in the original sense of the word. I do need to know about cracking though, in order to make more secure software, that's only a part of my job though.
I would have to say, networking and making really good cakes for my lady friends. Attempting to learn more outside my field, say code for example. Would like to know what social engineering and "authentication" is... ^_~ << puzzled look*
-side note, someone want to explain what is black and white hat to me? I'm sorry, so nub caker of me...
I can cook, and clean... bwahaha my LYSOL is stronger than yours. :D
Nothing wrong with being new or not knowing something. That is what being a hacker is all about (in the original sense of the word)... Learning. To put it simple (and stereotypical) think of it in the white knight/black knight comparison... Whitehats are on the side of law and ethics where as blackhats are termed as being the malicious criminals. Social Engineering is the art of gaining information without the use of technology. ...In a sense, hacking people... getting information out of them that they should not give, while they do not realize they are giving it to you.
I, myself, am still new to InfoSec, so I would say my specialty is (at the moment).... research. Google Hacking (to coin a now dying term)... though I hope to add to this list.
I´m curious.
But... i believe that my speacialty is related to wireless netwoks as ad hocs, meshs, bridge, infrastructures, routing, devices, antennas, site survey and etc.. usualy i try to understand how this thigs works and how it´s possible to protect and hack it. Involving anything... starting in social engenering atacks to retrieve useful infomation... technical attacks ... until fisical damage impact possible by exposition- yah the hammer way.
Got agree with pdp and Grayn0de... life is a school!
In my point of view.. theres no solution perfect solution for anything... but if you adopt some things... like the better cryptos avaible, authentication to your cenary and temporal keys you can avoid many problems...but of course - not all. Wireless devices suffers too much because the hardware limitation, that´s why crypto it´s critical in wireless. Other wireless critical problem is the deauthentication that are very easy to implement.
