House of Hackers

Hi,

since many hackers (what includes myself) do their research on their own (without a well known institute or so) I think it would be nice to have an independent hacker research publishing project where hackers can publish their research papers on a scientific level and do a peer-review on each other. publications could receive ratings and the best ones (that also received positive peer reviews) could be published (for example 1 or 2 or 3 or even 4 times a year, what depends on the number and quality of submitted papers) in a real book that includes the best new papers of the last months with a real ISBN while still being available online for free too. This would mean that the research papers of hackers would become real citable.

How about starting such a project and how to make that real? (For example: How to finance such a periodic book and and a ISBN -- maybe all people with articles printed would need to pay a part of the costs or so). I would be willing to start such a project if some other people would agree to join and contribute to it.

Sounds like a damn good idea, peer review and the Scientific process needs to be applied to more things. I would give you whatever help I can. I believe a lot of companies now allow small scale print runs, or we could simply get representitives in each country to represent the Journal to a publisher who could then sell on to academic institutions.

I like both of your ideas. I'll contact you, if I will start the project.

Are there any other people interested in it? (e.g. contributing, doing background-work and the like?).

I am interested in this too. I work for a print company which should have contacts with book printing I am sure. I think this place is seriously in need of such articles. I am not much of a hacker myself as i have had to self learn everything with no help or encouragement (I have never met another hacker) but I do enjoy reading the research from the skilled and tallented.

Keep me informed

What standards or guidelines would you establish to determine how credible the articles are? How would you determine the level of expertise an article would be assessed with? For example, would there be a beginners article forum using less technical language, and an advanced forum more appealing to the high ranking user?

It does seem to be a task that could build the reputation and integrity of this site and also increase membership as well as celebrate member contributions. In addition, it satisfies those who need opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and those who are visiting in search of legitimate learning opportunities.

What would be your timeline for completion? What policies would need to be developed for submission, review and approval? What criteria would be used to select articles you would seek to have published? Does anyone have contacts with publishers?

As for my own contributions, I am not likely to be free for many committments til 2010 but I think your idea deserves 5 stars! :)
