IRC is a good way to not spam the forums, that's been proven on countless forums. However, a conversation taking place on a forum will probably help more people than an IRC in the long run.

if the server is setup, i'd like it if we had someone intelligent secure it, rather than leave it open to sniffing.. its veeery easy to sniff pws & convos through irc daemons -_- brb, lunch ;)

Yea i don't think it's a good idea for IRC server, if we have an IRC server no one will use Blog or forum.
